FAQs

Why was The King’s Ginger created?

King Edward VII would endlessly drive his beloved Daimler, whatever the weather. In 1903 the Royal Physician became concerned about the monarch’s health.

So, he called on Berry Bros. and Rudd for a solution, a ginger liqueur that would warm and revivify His Majesty. Crafted from ginger, (for centuries celebrated for its medicinal properties) The King’s Ginger was born.

Has the recipe always remained the same from the start?

No. We continually aim to improve the products that we offer to our customers as we and our suppliers improve our production quality and know-how. So, while The King’s Ginger has always been an emphatically ginger flavoured liqueur, the actual recipe has evolved over the years since 1903. Berry Bros & Rudd Ltd is the owner of the recipe.

Where is the King’s Ginger liquid made?

The King’s Ginger has been made in different places over its many years, e.g. France in the 1930s and up until recently, in Holland. The King’s Ginger is a quintessentially English product that is steeped in English history and therefore we recently brought liquid production back to the UK.

Has the liquid formula changed with the new bottle?

Yes: though it remains a liqueur emphatically flavoured with ginger and lemon. We have brought production back to the UK from Holland, as it first was in 1903. However, the recipe has benefited from an increase in the level of ginger to deliver more of what King’s Ginger does best. This enhances the freshness and better complements the ginger bite. Both consumer and trade feedback suggests this is a universally approved improvement, recently winning a Gold Medal 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

What are the tasting notes for The King’s Ginger?

Colour: Hay and straw, rich golden syrup.

Nose: It is unmistakably Ginger – a cloud of fresh natural ginger with a faint aura of zesty lemon swiftly entices the first sip.

Palate: The initial flow of ginger syrup sweetness is gently interrupted by the tingle of fresh ginger and a subtle and gentle uplift of lemon citrus. Warm, fulfilling and of great length.

Can I still purchase the 41% version?

At present there are no plans to produce the 41% ABV version of the liquid.

Is the bottle recyclable?

Yes. The King’s Ginger is a brand rooted in legacy and, the greatest legacy we must pass down to the generations is a sustainable future. We are doing our part, starting by producing an entirely recyclable bottle.

Can I use The King’s Ginger in Cocktails?

Yes, there are a number of King’s Ginger cocktails to make with our ginger liqueur. View our recipe page for some inspiration.
